[ Mephisto had been excited to live in a house that he could call his "own". Not just a dilapidated building to spend the night in, or a warehouse he had to order to be cleared out, or a shelter that was next to falling apart - a real home. It was fun to tell Faust about it. It was nice to be able to show him to a real bed and brag about how he doesn't have to worry about it. But the brief time Till was gone from it... made it feel a lot emptier than Mephisto would have liked. Or maybe it was him? Maybe it was...
...
Mephisto festers in his feelings for longer than he would ever like to admit. Maybe since getting here, he hasn't really grieved. He's mostly been spiraling in a wash of emotions - the emptiness of not having Faust to the joy of having him here again. The sorrow of knowing he couldn't say goodbye to FrostNova, and the delight of finding a new maternal figure in Lily. It's... A lot. It's truly been a rollercoaster, and he's decided he hates rollercoasters now.
And he still hasn't really... talked to Faust about anything either. He's very smoothly just been talking about things that happened here and hasn't even apologized or... or anything about what's back home.
He... is the worst, isn't he?
He seeks Faust out later in the day, and he's going to get a Mephisto flopping into him for a limp hug when he's found. ]
[ Faust's feelings on many things are complicated to say the least. He doesn't begrudge Mephisto his happiness with his home or the people he's met here, but being hardwired not to trust people made living with a stranger in the house difficult. And it doesn't help the stranger seems less than fond of him.
But he tries for Mephisto's sake. He doesn't complain. Instead he attempts to work the problem out on his own to... debatable success. He doesn't think he's solved the issue, but he at least knows it's nothing personal against him now.
Faust has felt a bit aimless since arriving here. All he knew for sure is that his goal to keep Mephisto safe hasn't changed. He hasn't really settled down enough to decide what, if anything he'd do outside of that.
When Mephisto finds him, he's squinting at words printed in a book, attempting to read them on his own this time. He doesn't seem to mind sitting it aside when Mephisto approaches. His arms wrap around the liberi boy without hesitation, shifting to support him. Till wasn't in the house right now, thankfully, so he had no reservations about using his real name. ]
[ Both of them have been through far too much. The intense change of their lives is enough to give them whiplash, truly. This place... Mephisto can't even say it's a bad change, really. "Evil God that wants to torment them for fun" is not all that far off from the Hell that is the Ursine government. The people here are nicer. It... truly does remind him of the Reunion. You know, before Talulah changed...
"Is something wrong?" Yeah. There's a lot of things wrong. Too many things wrong. But also, not enough things wrong. Like good things are happening, and he...
His face presses into Faust's shoulder, voice muffled by his fabric. ]
...You're here. Nothing should be wrong, long as I have you, long as we have each other, da? Long as you don't... leave. [ Again. ] Я не знаю, почему я так себя чувствую.
[ The unspoken pain hurts him just as readily as if it were spoken. There's little hesitation in kissing the side of his head when he hides like that. It's one of the few actions of comfort they had. ]
[ So much of Mephisto's behavior stemmed from fear, he found. Or specifically the fear of something changing. But... he's here now. He's here and he's not going to do that to him again.
He knows that he isn't the best at handling these things. His words have pushed Mephisto to be worse simply because he's bad at expressing what he means. He's going to try harder. He has to. ]
I'm... I'll try not to leave you again. [ Promising that in the wake of what happened to Till and everything they saw in that nightmare town would sound empty, but he could try. He would always try. ] But I want to know how you're feeling. A lot has happened.
